After the 500m PB yesterday I was expecting to be under par today, not to do anything particularly good. But that is not what happened. The schedule was 3 x 10' AT (Anaerobic Threshold) and I stuck to that. On AT pieces I set off at "sub 7" pace (i.e. 1:45 split) and hold that until my heart rate hits 172. Today I pb'd on that with four minutes before having to slow down. I felt good and knew that I would more likely than not beat my pb for a 10' AT piece. I had to keep up a good pace to keep my heart rate at 172 and finished at 2,783m @ 1:47.8, which compares favourably with my 'pb' of 2,744 @ 1:49.3. Looking back I was not in great form then so I should not get too excited. Being ahead of where I was in June when not training well is not all that great news in reality.
But, it felt good and that is a start. My fitness is clearly up on June though because my heart rate dropped like a stone after these pieces. In the second I hit a sort of zen calmness in the middle of the row where the split and stroke rate were rock solid and I was cruising along. Another telling pointer on overall fitness is that my third piece today had a faster split (1:55.3) than the second piece in June (1:55.5).
So all in all I am happy. My ambitions of 6:30 at BIRC are long forgotten but I now cling to the hope of a PB and getting close to 6:40.
Metres today: 11,075
