500m PB and a runny nose - 2 days to EIRC

Still building up for the English Indoor Rowing Championships... On the C2 plan, the "two days to go" row is 3 x 90s at the anaerobic threshold.

Now, 90 seconds is longer than my 500m PB. And I felt that it would take a lot to get my heart to the AT threshold. Now, I know it is stupid, and I have a big race in 3 days, but hey, I'm an amateur aren't I. I went for my 500m PB. Confidence is a big thing in my rowing, so having a new PB under my belt would help I thought.

The last time I broke my 500m PB I tried a proper fly and die, so went with the same plan again. After 250m the average split was hovering at around 1:26.1. I was unable to hang on to that though and ended up with 1:26.5, a PB by 0.3 seconds.

The other two pieces were a struggle to keep at a heart rate of 172 but I just about finished them.

Then suddenly tonight an unexpected runny nose. Hope it is the (very) mild curry tonight and nothing else.

Because I feel as fit as I have ever done since taking up rowing again with Free Spirits. I am optimistic about the race on Sunday - still not sure about the pacing though. Should I aim for 6:39.9 or 6:42.4? Only a tiny, tiny difference but I have not gone faster than the 6:43.7 since I was ill. 1.4 seconds looks easier to me at the moment. I will probably set out at 1:41 though and go for the <6:40.

Metres today: 5,903
