Finally a 1,609 at pace...

I did not row yesterday. It is my normal day off and I needed to recover from the disappointment of Monday. It has been hectic at school with it being "activities week". Not time off and full on with the kids. I discovered that our "partner" (read deadly rival!) school gives staff one day off in the activities week to make up for all the effort!

Anyway, I had a "celebration" evening for the course I have finally finished tonight (celebrating getting through the political bs as much as finishing the course, though I learned a lot from the fine people I worked with). I came home feeling pretty tired in myself but the legs were relatively fresh so I decided to try for a mile at "pace". I knew that a PB was unlikely to materialise but thought that a 1:42 split was...possible. Instead of setting off like a lunatic I decided on a pace plan. It was 1:42 for 1,000m then see how accelerating felt in the next 109m. Then try and get faster through the last 500m. I rowed to plan (5:25.6-1:41.2 split) and was less than 3 seconds outside my PB which is pretty pleasing (and only a 10 watt difference in power). Adrenaline may well help there. I am now in two minds as to whether to taper to the race or just continue the C2 plan. Hmmm. Need to decide that. Where is my coach?!

Metres today: 5,719

Nice row Thomas, well done.
Can you help a novice and explain what "taper" means in this context?
Cheers, Steve
