Cake :( Carrots :D

Routine 2 x 7' AT tonight, which went OK. I rested yesterday because the CTC piece really took it out of me, and I was still tired. 1,955 @ 1:47, 1,865 @ 1:52.6.

Today was the local horticultural show. We made our debut since moving here. I used to live in this area and last entered the gentleman's sponge (7"-8", 3 eggs) 30 years ago. I came a disappointing last out of 4. I cooked a woeful first effort last night, then got up early and cooked a magnificent specimen this morning. It was perfect - I could not have done better. MBH also entered some stumpy carrots (pulling up the entire crop to find four the same!), some peas, some redcurrant vodka and some medlar jelly.

My cake limped home in 3rd place out of 5. I was, and still am, crushed. The winner was 6 years old. Well done to him. The only thing I can think was wrong with my cake was that it was too perfect! I'll be back next year with a lop-sided, over-cooked cake that doesn't rise. I'm not bitter (he said through gritted teeth!). MBH's carrots did better and stormed home in first place out of 3. Yay! To be fair the other entries in the class were not stumpy but we're not fussy.

The kids entered the drawing competition and the miniature garden competition, and got "highly commended" (as did every other child not in the top three!). Interestingly they seemed so worried about doing it "wrong" that they created facsimiles of each other's work. They'll have learned from this and will have more of an idea for next year.

It was fun to enter and we'll be back next year. I am sure that I will get over the cake debacle by Christmas. 2008. I'll drink the redcurrant vodka and eat the medlar jelly spread on my cake. I am sure that will help!
