3' flat out - 1k attempt - 3:12.4

So, following the C2 countdown now, which seemed sensible given I cannot row tomorrow, and only just squeezed this one in today. I am still not 100% and even today was considering whether I would row at all.

But a great frinde announced yesterday he could vmake one of his rare and precious visits. He has difficulty fitting his personal life around his day job of being a GB rowing coach. I thought I would row and he could give me some last minute tips before BIRC.

Sadly he was delayed so I had to get some tips via text message. Here they are. You can see why GB won so many rowing medals:

"Use your legs more, pull hard, pull harder."

Genius.

C2 say do a 3 minute piece flat out today. Traditionally I have done a 1k pb attempt. I knew that the amazing 3:07.8 was NOT on the agenda, so aimed for a more conservative sub 3:15, possibly 3:10.x if I could make it. I had felt strong on warm up and my initial plan of a 3:20 (@ 1:40 seemed a little wimpy given the 40 before 40 extravaganza). I am still hacking stuff up though.

My pace plan was again fast, then see... I rowed 1:35 nicely for the first 300m but by then realised that 1:35 all the way might be too much to bare. I got to 500m at 1:35.1 but then quite deliberately eased back to 1:36s, 1:37s... I held at arounf 1:38 until the last 200, but I wouldn't say my sprint for home set the World alight. The second half was completed in 1:37.3 for a final 3:12.4. Not too bad under the circumstanced. Under Paul's law that equates to a 6:44 row.

The odd thing was that although on the limit and unable to row harder I felt I had more throuhout. I just couldn't access it! At the end my lungs were pretty tight, but after warming down they seem fine. The legacy of my illness perhaps?

Short warm down then I will greet my friend.

Metres today: 4,000
