Not great

I went to the doc this morning because I was coughing a lot in the night and it was painful to do so. Normally I would have left it, but with BIRC 6 days away I couldn't afford to. He said that my chest was clear and that (as we all know) there is nothing he can do about a virus. Although I was hacking stuff up there was no sign of infection - the previous course of amoxycillin should have cleared that up. He still put me on more amoxycillin though, but I am pretty sure that was because I explained my BIRC predicament and he felt sorry for me.

Anyway, psychosomatic or no, I feel a little better. Still a sore chest and throat, and I am losing my voice, but I don't feel so wiped out. I have decided to pretend I am 100% and do the last week of BIRC training. This means that today was a gentle 25 minute row (just what I needed after three days off), then a day off, then a hard 1000m on Wednesday. Wednesday will be the big test - if I can do a hard 1,000m and hold my heart rate close to the maximum without my lungs packing up I will be much more confident for the weekend. As I write this I am not confident.

Anyway, after my very gentle (UT2) row tonight my lungs feel more tender. I just have to hope that the day off and amoxycillin help and that I am fighting fit by Sunday. Watch this space.

Thomas hope you will be ok for BIRC. Puzzled about why your doctor is prescribing antibiotics for a virus - is he worried about a secondary infection?

I think it is partly because I pointed out that I immediately declined 24 hours after the last dose of ABs and partly because I said that I had trained 6 months for BIRC and was desperate. To be honest he was pretty reluctant but took pity on me. And though I am still sore I am glad that there is less chance of an infection taking hold. The last thing I need is the soreness to develop in to a hacking cough. I am still hacking stuff up but not as much and not as solid. There's a nice picture for you...
