Films not to row to... + I am famous (again)

Pulled a 57' UT2 (144hr/19sr) tonight. I selected the wrong film to row to though! I put on "Dodge Ball" which is hysterical. I thought I knew it pretty well but it is hard to pull a constant split when you are laughing out loud. There is some real slapstick in there but it gets me every time. I also spotted some more things that I had seen before. I was rowing strapless and nearly fell off the ergo.

The other day I rowed to a bizarre film, "Wings of Desire". This is (I think) about angels or something and is in German. Black and white and occasionally in colour. It came free with The Independent a while ago. Now, when trying to maintain a dead on split and heart rate involves a lot of looking at the PM3. Following an obtuse, subtitled film was impossible. I gave up. I still have no idea what it was about.

I am again famous, and got another letter published in The Independent. This time a loony article about WiFi caught my attention. My letter got in a little while later. They edited it a bit (took out one essential "etc.") but that's life. Here is my original email with the etc.

As a science teacher, I was stunned by the pseudo 'science' that Julia Stephenson was allowed to promote (My war on electrosmog: Julia Stephenson sets out to clear the airwaves). We do live in an electrosmog. Indeed we have evolved from the primordial soup in an electrosmog and those electromagnetic waves (light, microwaves, radio-waves etc.) continue to inform us about the origins of the Universe. As for an electromagnetic waves making someone 'radioactive' I would hope that most of my mixed ability Year 10 students could point out the idiocy of that statement.

A Wi-Fi transmitter operates at less than 1 watt. The Crystal Palace transmitter works at many thousands of watts but I don't remember South London's plants wilting when that started transmitting digital TV signals in the mid-nineties.

We keep being told that there is a crisis in science education in this country. Perhaps this sort of staggering scaremongering is evidence of that Either way it has given me a great piece of material to use in class as an example of how scientific ignorance can lead to fear and the purchase of expensive trinkets with no proven effect.

So, I am famous once again. My last letter was about decimalisation...

Metres today: 14,590

Ya watching good (slapstick) comedy is not good if you want to do a decent row, I was reduced to a crawl several time's when watching "Something about Mary" with the laughter
