Racing again (balls required)

I was relieved to complete a full 10k yesterday (albeit slowly for the last four), so today wanted to do a better 5,000m piece for the Concept 2 Challenge. My previous time was a gentle 19:30 odd, and I wanted to go better than 19:20. I set a pace boat of 1:57 with the aim of following that to 4,000m, then going for home.

1:57 felt very slow, so I went at 1:54s for a while then eased back when my heart rate got to 165. I Rowed on heart rate for the next 2,000m. Coming back from inactivity I have learned that heart rate is very important to control if you want a reasonable experience. I found that with 1,000m to go I was tantalisingly short of a sub 19 minute row. I went for it in the last 1,000 but my heart rate shot up and I couldn't sustain it. I came home with a 19:04.3 which is not too bad. It is a sub 1:55 split which cheers me up enormously.

I know from experience that coming back is hard to start with but residual fitness bubbles to the top soo nenough. Then it is the long hard slog back to competativeness - and you just know that Wolfie will be waiting when you get to the top!

Metres today: 7,007
