I think I have an explanation for why, when I do two or three days in a row on my new programme I feel whacked. I have been interpreting the C2 plan wrong.
When it has said "3 × (1,500 @ 5k / 2,000 @ FM)" I have interpreted that as one continuous piece. Reading through the notes (and it is not at all clear) I think that it is three separate pieces and between you are supposed to row gently until your heart rate hits 2 × resting (in my case this is 108).
Having worked this out, I again failed to complete my targets for today, only managing two of the above pieces, not three. We were off to see "The Queen" at Saffron Screen (our fantastic local community cinema) so family dinner was booked for 5:30. I was early back from school*, but late starting on the erg because I'd been watching the BIRC DVD C2 kindly sent me to use at school (the one on the web is a bit grainy). Interestingly there are several glimpses of Nick Shuker on the official BIRC DVD. Well done Nick!
Not surprisingly having a chance to rest between pieces made them easier. Der. I found the step down from 5km pace (1:46) to FM pace (2:05) hard. It is easy to give up completely and drop to 2:20. Second time round it went far better and I was 1.5 seconds quicker despite feeling more tired. I am enjoying this new type of rowing. I never done this sort of split piece before.
*I have asked the head to find somewhere in the dining hall for the erg. I like the idea of the kids rowing all lunch time in an effort to get to our partner school in Uganda - something I read about another school doing on the C2 web site. Not sure what the kids will make of rowing in public so I can envisage the rower trundling too and from the gym from actoss the asphalt each week. I wonder what effect that will have on the wheels?
