Three days ago I did a silly thing and signed up for the Indoor Rowing at the South Island Masters. It was 100 days before the big race when I signed up - now 97.
Pros:
- it might get me rowing again
- it is being held just down the road in Timaru
- I might get some value out of this Model D I am paying for.
Cons:
- it is in 100 days;
- I have not rowed regularly for months (maybe years);
- I have entered four events on one day (2k, 1k, 500m and 100m); and
- it is going to hurt
On balance I think that the pros outweigh the cons so I have started the original Pete Plan once more. Two days ago it was the 8 x 500m (very conserative on this at the start but ended with a 1:42 on the last and an average of 1:47 which was not too bad). Today was the not too daunting 5 x 1,500m which I managed in an average of 1:55.7, though the last row at 1:54.4 was challenging. The good news is that my maxHR was relatively low on the last rep (because I am so out of condition), but I know that will improve and this will help my times a little.
Rowing is so hard! My biceps and chest were sore after the sprinting but fine today. On the "hard row" of the plan in a few days I will aim for a 2k test and then we'll see. I will be looking at sub 7:20 if I can manage it. I aim to be sub 7 by September 1st and to do a sub 6:50 on the big day (9th October). But that will take total dedication (once more) to the training...
